The Romans conquered Dorset's indigenous Celtic tribe, and during the early Middle Ages, the Saxons settled the area and made Dorset a shire in the 7th century. The first recorded Viking raid on the British Isles also occurred in Dorset during the 8th century and the black death entered England at Melcombe Regis in 1348, so Dorset has a rich history & background.

Dorset has a varied landscape featuring broad elevated chalk downs, steep limestone ridges and low-lying clay valleys. Smuggling took place along the Dorset coast as its coves and caves provided the perfect recipe for gangs like the Hawkhursts to smuggle goods ashore.

Did you know..? Dorset is one of the few counties in England not to have a motorway!
