Dorset is in Southwest England on the coast of the English Channel. Covering an approximate area of 2,653 sq kms (1,024 sq miles), Dorset borders Devon to the west, Somerset to the north-west, Wiltshire to the north-east, and Hampshire to the east.
Like many counties Dorset has a long history of human settlement stretching right back to the Neolithic era.
The area has many fine beaches including of course the lovely golden sands at Bournemouth. In fact, over half of the county is designated as an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and almost all of its coastline is a World Heritage Site.
